Google's New AI Mode Links (Oct 2026): 5 Things Small Businesses Should Change This Week
On October 15, 2026, Google updated how links appear inside AI Mode and AI Overviews. If your business relies on being found in Google, the change is worth understanding, because it shifts which kinds of pages get a visible link.
What Google changed
Based on Google's announcement as reported by Search Engine Roundtable:
- More inline links now appear directly inside AI answers.
- A top section highlights one or two links for finishing a specific task or finding an exact piece of information.
- News carousels for timely topics are now available globally, and they highlight a reader's Preferred Sources. Google says Preferred Sources usage has grown 7x since the start of the year.
- The "Dive Deeper" section has a more clickable design with image thumbnails.
- Clickable publisher and creator names on video results are being tested. They go to Google's Search profile page first, not to your own site.
One catch: Google still does not show click data for AI features in its reports. It says it will "introduce additional metrics over time." So nobody can yet see directly whether these links bring in visits. Treat claims of guaranteed traffic gains from this update with suspicion.
5 things to change this week
1. Make one page per task or exact question. The new top section favors pages that complete a specific job or give a precise answer ("how to appeal a denied claim", "pricing for X", "how to book Y"). Check your key pages: does each one answer one clear question near the top, in plain words?
2. Put the answer first. State the answer in the first paragraph, then explain. Pages that bury the answer under a long intro are harder to cite or link.
3. Publish timely content only when you have something real to say. News carousels reward timely topics, but only if you actually have a point of view or new information. Skip rewrites of other people's news.
4. Ask your regular customers and readers to add you as a Preferred Source (if you publish news-style or update content). Add a short, honest note on your blog or newsletter explaining how. This only matters for topical, news-like content, not for every business.
5. Set up your own measurement. Because Google gives no AI click data, track what you can: Search Console impressions and clicks for your key pages, and run a simple monthly check, asking ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the questions your customers ask and recording whether you are mentioned or linked. Keep a dated log so you can see change over time.
What not to do
Don't mass-produce pages to chase this. More links in AI answers does not mean more pages are better; Google's systems still favor useful, original content. A few strong pages that answer real questions beat dozens of thin ones.
The bottom line
The update rewards clear, task-focused pages and trusted publishers. It does not change the basics: be specific, be accurate, and make it easy for a person (or an AI) to find the answer on your page.
